Former Zululander finds matric dance partner on Facebook

The 18-year-old became an overnight sensation on social media when he made a heartfelt plea on Facebook to find a matric dance partner.

AN inspiring story of modern day chivalry has emerged from Gingindlovu’s own prince charming, Deon Govender.

The 18-year-old became an overnight sensation on social media when he made a heartfelt plea on Facebook to find a matric dance partner.

But there was a catch, Deon was seeking only someone who had never had the chance to attend their own matric dance.

The former Zululander, now a pupil at Durban North College and his mother Veeno Govender, agreed to cover all the expenses including the dress, transport, hair and make-up.

The request went viral with more than 4 000 likes and a thousand shares.

A host of sponsors also joined in to help turn one girl’s dream into a reality.

‘A matric dance is one event you truly look forward too,’ Deon told the Zululand Observer.

‘Unfortunately not everyone gets that opportunity owing to various circumstances or constraints, therefore the idea was to allow someone else the privilege,’ Deon said.

Out of almost 300 applicants, the story of 19-year-old Tanéal Tucker caught his eye.

‘Tanéal stood out for me. She had to drop out of school to care for her ailing mother and mentally challenged sister and is now attending night classes to complete her matric.’

After an exquisite night for the unlikely couple, Deon said he hoped the act of kindness would set a trend by allowing other matriculants to open their hearts to less fortunate individuals.
