Mtuba sinkhole effects road closure
Motorists are urged to use alternate routes when travelling through Mtubatuba as a portion of the R618/Riverview Road remains closed until further notice
PART of the R618/Riverview Road in Mtubatuba is closed until further notice as the KZN Department of Transport carries out an investigation into the cause of the sinkhole.
‘We ask people of Mtubatuba to be patient while the road is closed. Our departments are working around the clock to fix the road,’ said Acting Mtubatuba Municipal Manager Sipho Mathobela.
The sinkhole is an estimated four meters wide and three meters deep and appeared during rush-hour traffic on Wednesday evening, swallowing a Toyota Quantum taxi as the road collapsed.
There were no passengers in the taxi and the driver was reportedly taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The road is closed between the traffic lights and the N2/Bhoboza turn-off. Motorists are urged to use alternate routes when travelling in Mtubatuba.
