PSL hero hails from rural Dondotha

Siyabonga Sangweni was hailed as a local hero and a shining example both for his family and his community.

SIYABONGA Sangweni was hailed as a local hero and a shining example both for his family and his community.

The accolades heaped on the soccer star were echoed by politicians, sports personnel, and his colleagues during the weekend sports tournament that bore his name.

The annual event, pioneered by uMfolozi Municipality, ‘using’ Sangweni as its anchor was held at rural Dondotha Sports Ground.

uMfolozi Mayor S Mgenge said he has been following Sangweni since he started playing professional football, as a good example and a role-model to other youngsters.

‘We then decided to use him as a hero and player of one of the big soccer clubs, to motivate our young people through sport, so they steer away from social ills and other viles,’ added Mgenge.

He further thanked Tebogo Moloi for bringing the Pirates’ legends and Pirates’ new crop of players, all the way from Gauteng to Sangweni’s humble Dondotha area.

Orlando Pirates assistant coach Tebogo Moloi said Siyabonga and his younger brother Thami have done the area of Dondotha proud, and set a good example to rural boys and girls.

‘We all know how difficult for children from these backgrounds to make it in the big soccer leagues, but Siya has done his people proud with his success.

‘I also want to thank him for the good work he does for the Buccaneers club,’ Moloi added.

Edward Motale said, ‘This event came at the most opportune time, when everybody is busy trying to protect the youth against social ills like drugs and alcohol.’

Siyabonga thanked all who attended the tournament, especially Orlando Pirates players-old and new, for their support.

Siyabonga’s team mate Ayanda Gcaba said through the tournament, Siyabonga has motivated him to also do something for his Port Shepstone community.
