Crime clean-up in Mtubatuba

Police made a total of 79 arrests during Operation Fiyela.

NUMEROUS law enforcement officers from various law enforcement agencies came together in a joint effort to rid Mtubatuba of crime, as part of the province’s Operation Fiyela.

South African Police Services (SAPS), South African National Defence Force (SANDF), Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), as well as representatives from the KZN Department of Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Home Affairs and the KZN Liquor Authority (KZNLA) spent Monday morning patrolling Mtubatuba’s streets in an attempt to clamp down on various crimes in the area.

‘The SANDF is not normally deployed within South Africa’s borders but, to show citizens we are serious about combating crime, one company of just over 100 officers is used specifically for operations such as this across the province,’ said SANDF Lieutenant-Colonel Van Eeden from 121 Battalion in Dukuduku.

A total of 79 arrests were made during the operation, 25 of which were undocumented immigrants from Mozambique, Uganda and Swaziland, who will shortly be deported. Furthermore, one unlicensed firearm and one stolen vehicle were recovered and three people were arrested for contravention of the liquor license law.
