UPDATE: Two in court for school shooting

MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu visited the Ntombela and Nhleko families today to express their sincere condolences and support.

TWO men will appeared in court today following a double killing at Luvisi Primary School in Nquthu on Tuesday.

A Grade 6 pupil was killed in crossfire when unknown gunmen entered the school premises in what is believed to be an act of assassination on Deputy Principal and Speaker of the Nquthu Municipality, Vusi Ntombela.

Gun-wielding assailants shot and killed Councillor Vusi Ntombela in full view of the class.

Pupil Elizabeth Nhleko (12) was shot in the chest and died in hospital, while Bongumusa Cele, also 12 years old, was seriously injured and is receiving treatment at a local hospital.

Pandemonium broke out as traumatised children scurried for cover as the gunmen sprayed the bullets randomly on Ntombela.

Three suspects were arrested soon after the incident and one was later released.

KZN education spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi sent pupils and the educators home on Tuesday morning and arranged for psychologists to be at the school on Wednesday for a trauma debriefing session.

The department is calling for calm and has asked the community to let the police carry out their investigation.

A top government delegation, including Members of Parliament visited the Nquthu area on Tuesday.
