Empowering young women with ‘Take a girl child to work’

Grade 10 to 12 girls spent the day at Foskor Acid Division in Richards Bay.

ADDRESSING the needs and aspirations of young girls in Richards Bay was one of the main reasons why Foskor’s Acid Division participated in the ‘Take a girl child to work’ initiative.

The campaign, which is celebrating its 13th anniversary, strives to inspire Grade 10 to 12 girls by allowing them to shadow business executives.

This year Foskor decided to recruit the girls internally, which saw their employees’ children catching a glimpse of what a day in the life is like at the organisation.

Foskor’s Corporate Social Investment spokesperson, Thembile Jobe, said the company’s involvement plays a significant role in empowering the young ladies.

‘We believe we are able to provide them with the motivation to pursue meaningful careers that will bring to them social and economic benefits.

‘This project also serves to motivate girls so that they can work in any male-dominated environment, as long as they have the necessary skills,’ she said.

Participants were also treated to a tour of the plant, and walked away with certificates and a range of gifts.
