Stolen firearm recovered in Mtubatuba

A stolen rifle, thought to have been used in rhino poaching, was recovered near Mtubatuba.

RECOVERING unlicensed firearms remains high on the police’s list of priorities.

The most recent operation in KwaMsane resulted in the recovery of a rifle, stolen in 2006 and thought to have subsequently been used in poaching activities.

Shortly after 11pm on Monday, members of Empangeni Crime Intelligence, together with the KwaMsane Tactical Response Team (TRT), conducted an operation in oPhondweni following a tip-off.

When police officers arrived at the homestead, the suspect was not there but a search of the premises revealed a .303 rifle fitted with a telescopic lens and five rounds of ammunition.

The rifle’s serial number was clearly visible and checks revealed it had been stolen during a Krugersdorp farm attack in 2006.

Ballistic tests will confirm whether the firearm was used in any criminal activities. It is believed that it had been used for rhino poaching in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park and other game reserves.

While the suspect remains at large, crime intelligence officers are working around the clock on the investigation and hope to make an arrest soon.
