NSRI evacuates sick crewman from ship

NSRI and paramedics rescue Filipino man from bulk carrier in Richards Bay.

A FILIPINO man was rescued by NSRI Richards Bay duty crew yesterday after he suffered dehydration and stomach cramps onboard a bulk carrier.

According to station commander, Dorian Robertson, the crew were alerted by the Transet National Ports Authority to prepare for the arrival of Canon Trader I.

‘The ship was sailing from India to Richards Bay and a 25-year-old crewman was sick,’ said Robertson.

NSRI launched the sea rescue craft, Spirit of Richards Bay, accompanied by a Netcare 911 rescue paramedic.

‘On arrival at the ship, NSRI rescue crew and the paramedic were transferred aboard the ship where they treated the patient with intravenous fluid therapy, oxygen and medical care and he was secured into a stokes basket stretcher and transferred aboard our sea rescue craft and brought to shore.

‘The patient was then transported to hospital in a stable condition for further treatment,’ said Robertson.
