Breaking News: Security guard gunned down in Empangeni robbery

The man was shot in the back and head.

A SECURITY guard was shot three times in Maxwell Street, Empangeni at about 11am this morning.

A man opened fire on the guard who was on his way into Standard Bank to conduct personal banking, wounding him in the back and and in the head.

According to Empangeni SAPS spokesperson, Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, witnesses confirmed they had only seen one gunman.

‘We are unsure how many other suspects were in the vehicle,’ said Mdlalose.

The suspects fled in a silver Volvo, registration number NPN 52523.

Residents are urged to contact Empangeni SAPS on 035 907 5803/06 if the vehicle is spotted.

Officials on scene described the victims’ condition as critical and he was rushed to hospital after he was stabilised on scene.

The suspects made off with an undisclosed amount of cash and a firearm.
