Spring tides take toll today

Alkantstrand erosion unchecked.

EARLY morning spring tides on Monday ate further and deeper into the shoreline at Alkantstrand, washing away another two metres of the dune barrier in front of the lifeguard house.

While strong north-easterly winds flatted the sea over the weekend, preventing excessive erosion, change of wind direction saw bigger waves take their toll during the dawn high tide.

Sand bags lain before the weekend proved of minimal value against the ocean’s relentless assault.

While a large quantity of sand has been trucked to the area, presumably to fill more bags, there is still no dredging activity.
