Honorary Officers go the extra mile

New Exco for Honorary Officers.

THANKS to a small, but dedicated group of volunteers, local Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife (EKZNW) officials received excellent help in fulfilling their duties over the past year.

Members present on Saturday at the AGM of the Mhlathuze Conservation District (Marine), heard that Honorary Officers (HOs) spent 1 433 hours and covered 1 183km on patrols up to the end of February.

‘We could simply not have done without your sacrifice of time and energy,’ said EKZNW Officer-In-Charge, Kevin Green.

‘You gave up family time to patrol, clean beaches and attend meetings and functions, and conducted your activities in a most professional manner, which is noted with much thanks.’

In his outgoing report, Chairman Walter Emmerson said the low point of a busy year was the big oil spill in the harbour, which had been first brought to the attention of authorities by Honorary Officers.

Incoming Chairman Jaco Bates said in addition to a concerted effort to bring in new blood, he would be starting a junior HO corps.

Regional Co-ordinator Louis Fourie urged members to familiarise themselves with the ‘big picture’ of the organisation and to learn the roles and responsibilities of the various levels of officials.
