Proudly gay and breaking prejudices

Richards Bay participant makes waves at Mr Gay South Africa competition

VIVACIOUS, grounded and charming his way through the Mr Gay South Africa pageant, 22-year-old Jaco Botha of Richards Bay is determined to destroy the misconception of pageants and homosexuality.

From a late entry, Botha made it to the top 12 in the national competition.

‘It is a misjudgement in thinking you need a great body, reside in a City and be all these pretentious and commercial things to make the grade,’ Jaco said.

‘I want people to gain confidence in who they are and be true to that person. I had no confidence at all. I was fat and withdrawn, but I put my mind to it and started making changes.

‘I want to be a representative of change, prove to myself I am capable and be an influence to others. Nothing is impossible.

‘It has not been easy, the biggest challenge I have faced is a change of mindset. I kept focusing on my flaws, but eventually realised it’s the very thing that makes me human and unique.’ he said.

Inspired by gay Olympic diver Tom Daley, Jaco hopes to become a motivational speaker in time to come.

‘I want to motivate the youth and build confidence in others, encourage them to take risks and live a full life.

‘An enriched person contributes to an enriched community.

‘At school, I would always take part in sport and drama, and I did not have an interest in girls. I made nothing of it until I matriculated.

‘I started questioning myself and my sexuality. I was very conflicted at the time and it caused me to make bad decisions along the way.

‘When I eventually came out, it was like a burden had been lifted off my shoulders.

‘Therefore, I want to help others fight that battle because I know that it is not an easy lifestyle. You need to be resilient and confident.’ Jaco said.

Also a black ball (snooker) player in the uMhlathuze League, Jaco has received KZN colours, won several medals and trophies and has competed in the SA Championships for three consecutive years.
