Two die as train ploughs into car

Two Swazi nationals killed in Mtuba train accident.

TWO people were killed during rush hour traffic in Mtubatuba on Friday when a train ploughed into a vehicle at the Futululu level crossing.

The accident occurred just before 5pm and KZN EMS paramedics arrived shortly thereafter.

The driver of the car and one of his passengers were pronounced dead at the scene, while the second passenger was critically injured and taken to Ngwelezana Hospital.

According to the train driver, he was en route from Richards Bay harbour to Golela, Swaziland.

He told police he saw the blue Toyota Corolla approaching the level crossing at high speed. He blew the train’s horn as warning to the driver, but to no avail.

At the time of going to print, the names of the deceased had not been released as relatives had not yet been informed.

A case of culpable homicide has been opened by Mtubatuba SAPS.
