A blind man who never lost his vision

Local resident remains ambitious despite setbacks.

GOING completely blind in 2012 did not stop Arboretum resident, Leon Grobler from living his life to the fullest.

He was diagnosed with the hereditary disease, Retinitis Pigmentosa just over two years ago when he and his wife of 18 years, Belinda were in Pretoria.

His doctor’s prediction of complete blindness came to pass 12 months later.

Although Leon was taken aback at what had happened, he managed to quickly adapt to his new lifestyle ‘in three to four months’.

‘You do not count the number of times you get knocked down, it is how many times you get back up,’ he boldly stated.

This was the motto which struck his inner ambitious chord and resulted in him successfully completing a NQF2 contact centre support course, which he pursued at Optima College.

‘My husband always has a will to win, so I knew he would rise above this,’ Belinda said.

Before his eye condition, Leon was the Operations Manager at Kimony Mine for over 10 years and later moved on to NatAfrica where he fulfilled a supervisory role. He is now seeking employment and hopes an opportunity can surface at one of the local corporates.
