WE agree fully with BORED STUDENT (ZO 15 December) about no facilities for decent law abiding residents and visitors in Richards Bay.

The few options which were available – putt putt, super tubes, crocodile farm – were all closed by the municipality with the promise of ‘new’ developments to follow.

Not a single one of these promises materialised over the past 10 years. Shame on the Council for failing so dismally.

The Tourism Committee is ineffective and has no impact, except having functions to eat and talk. Nothing concrete ever happens except pie in the sky daydreams. They deliver nothing practical or have had any successes since inception. It’s a waste of money.

Where are areas which can be developed for quad bikes by entrepreneurs?

Where can the crocodile farm/ reptile city be re-developed?

Where can a putt putt facility be re-developed?

All of these away from the drunken arrivals and parties that typifies the skate park parking lot as well as Alkantstrand in recent years.

Why is alcohol not confiscated at the beach from drunken children and adults?

That will force the drunks to other areas away from law abiding swimmers and visitors.

Alkantstrand has become the prime spot for drunks and misbehaving visitors from outside, as demonstrated by the three children murdered recently.

This image of lawless drunkenness and parties is now the trademark, not tourism.

If all entrepreneurs in Zululand were allowed to participate on equal terms, Richards Bay will become a Mecca for entertainment and fun.

The policy of preference, which does not deliver, is however practised, without success.

Until that changes, Umhlanga, Ballito and Durban are the only options for proper, controlled entertainment.

What an opportunity lost to Zululand and its people owing to lack of vision and leadership.
