City beefs ups security at Alkantstrand

Following the death of three matrics over the weekend, the City of uMhlathuze has already upped its plans to prevent further incidents over the festive season.

THE torn-apart lives of three grieving families were tragically symbolised by the blood, broken bottles and disgraceful state of the Bay Hall area where three matriculants were stabbed to death over the weekend.

They were part of a large group celebrating the end of their exams at a ‘pens down’ party when a fight broke out and resulted in the three pupils being fatally stabbed.

While police search for the killers from among the group, the City of uMhlathuze has already upped its plans to prevent further such incidents over the festive season.

uMhlathuze Municipal Manager, Dr Nlanhla J Sibeko, extended his condolences to the victims’ families.

‘One death is too many. Parents need to warn their children of coming to the beach to host overnight parties, especially with drugs and alcohol involved.

‘This beach is closed at night and the so-called gatherings by the youth after hours are prohibited and illegal,’ he said.

After Saturday’s tragedy occurred, Council held an emergency meeting on Monday with the security team regarding public safety and the ‘ongoing’ issue of lawlessness and littering.

Sibeko said: ‘Council will bring the entire safety plan forward whereby the boom gate will be erected from this Friday at the entrance to Alkantstrand, forming a search station.

‘Anyone with alcohol and dangerous weapons will be turned away.’

The municipality has also put out a stern warning to the public about any misdemeanour.

The CRG Security presence at the Bay Hall area has been increased and anybody not adhering to proper conduct will be evicted.

Lifeguards will also be stationed at the Bay Hall from 16 December.

Council has also amended the by-laws for consuming liquor in public spaces.

‘The public is warned that Alkantstrand is strictly an alcohol-free zone.

‘There will be search stations and anybody found with alcohol will be turned away or have their alcohol confiscated,’ said Sibeko.
