New wage rate for domestic workers

Those who work in metropolitan areas have an adjusted hourly rate of R10.95.

ADJUSTED minimum wages for domestic workers will be effective from Monday to 30 November 2015.

This was the message from Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant’s office on Tuesday.

This new wage structure will be applicable to domestic helpers who work for more than 27 ordinary hours per week.

Those who work in metropolitan areas have an adjusted hourly rate of R10.95, a weekly rate of R476.68 and a monthly rate of R2 065.47.

Adjustments to wages for domestic workers outside metropolitan areas come to an hourly rate of R9.30, a weekly rate of R418.32, and R1 812.57 per monthly.

Minimum wages for domestic workers who work 27 ordinary hours have also been adjusted.

Wages applicable to those who work in metropolitan areas are adjusted to a R12.40 hourly, R334.74 weekly and R1 450.33 monthly rates.

Rates outside metropolitan areas are R10.98 per hour worked, R296.35 per week and R1 284.09 per month.

The implementation of minimum wage structure acts in accordance with laws protecting workers in sectors who are vulnerable to possible exploitation.
