Log smashes through motorist’s windscreen

Women survives freak accident on N2.

A MOTORIST is still reeling after a log dislodged from the back of a truck and smashed through her windscreen on the N2 yesterday.

The accident took place on the highway just before the Felixton bridge.

According to Dr Shamin Allamchund, the log came off the truck and crashed through the front windscreen of her Range Rover.

‘I managed to keep the vehicle under control and thankfully nobody was injured. I have a blurred image of the truck stopping momentarily at the Engen garage.’

After turning back at the next off ramp, Allamchund drove the vehicle back to Engen.

‘Good Samaritans rallied around me until my husband arrived. I am so glad I did not became another statistic,’ said Allamchund.

Neither the truck nor its driver were anywhere to be seen after the incident occurred.

In a separate incident, a 10-year-old Empangeni Preparatory pupil was injured on Friday afternoon after he was hit by a motorbike while crossing Rex Henderson Drive, Empangeni.

According to a witness who arrived on the scene minutes after the accident, the child was lying on the side of the road with serious injuries to his legs and head.

‘Fortunately a doctor was on hand, instructing bystanders not to move the child as she was worried about the head injuries.’

An ambulance was called and the boy was transported to Ngwelezana Hospital.

After speaking to Empangeni Preparatory Headmaster, Mr BD Dlamuka yesterday, it was confirmed the child was recovering well.

A case of reckless driving has been opened with the Empangeni SAPS.

  1. It’s about time that all trucks be checked by authorities first for overloading and then for not having safety nets or straps over the logs and roadworthyness and the speeds they travel !! Every day hunderds of truck transport loads illegally and endangering our lives !! They just don’t care because you are in a small car and defenseless !!!! But the no care attitude of the authorities says it all – they will sit under a tree with a camera and yes sometimes 4 of them with one camera !!!! Then the drivers and the owners attitude must also change !!!!!!
