Mashaba re-elected as regional ANC head

No change of power for local ANC region as Thulani Mashaba retains post

THE ANC Musa Dladla region saw no change at the helm when its top cadre Thulani Mashaba was re-elected as regional chairperson during the party’s elective conference at the University of Zululand on Saturday night.

More than 700 delegates attended the conference, which included a high ranking provincial ANC delegation comprising Willies Mchunu, Nomvula Mokonyane, Mike Mabuyakhulu and Peggy Nkonyeni.

With 555 voting delegates participating in the elections, Mashaba retained his post, while Nonhle Mkhulisi was elected secretary, Dudu Sibiya as deputy secretary and Thelumoya Zulu as treasurer.

Speaking to the Zululand Observer shortly after his election, Mashaba said unity within the party ranks was his first priority.

‘Unity is the cornerstone of the party. I will work tirelessly to achieve this and will embrace all members, including those who had other preferred candidates. This is not just the responsibility of the leadership but every member of the ANC. We will also work to consolidate support on the ground ahead of the 2016 local government elections,’ Mashaba said.

The three-day regional conference saw a number of robust debates to map the way forward for the Musa Dladla region, which incorporates towns such as Richards Bay and Empangeni.
