Obituary Dr Vaatjie du Toit

Zululander Dr Vaatjie du Toit delivered more than 2 500 babies during his career.

WELL-KNOWN Zululander Dr Vaatjie du Toit passed away on Monday 7 July at Howick in the KZN Midlands at the age of 78.

He was born on 30 July 1935 in Cape Town to John and Eve du Toit.

Vaatjie grew up in Cape Town, attending school in Parow before studying medicine at the University of Cape Town.

After graduating, he completed his housemanship in Bloemfontein and then moved to Addington Hospital in Durban where he met and married Jacqui Smith.

They moved to Empangeni in 1965 where Vaatjie spent three years working for Tongaat Hullet before going into private practice.

Vaatjie and Jacqui spent 48 wonderful years in Zululand. During that time they raised four children and he built a busy practice in Empangeni.

During his career, he delivered more than 2 500 babies.

He was a keen cyclist and enjoyed scuba diving at Sodwana.

Vaatjie and Jacqui retired to Howick in the KZN Midlands in 2008. They have made many friends and settled happily into the Midlands community.

Vaatjie is survived by his wife Jacqui; his children Paul and Jenny, Penelope and Mark, Catherine and David, and John and Lyall, as well as his seven grandchildren – Megan, Thomas, Jacob, Robert, Rachel, Joshua and Ashley.

A memorial service will be held at the Upper Umgeni Presbyterian Church, 67 Main Road, Howick at 11am this Saturday.
