Sugar industry gather for bowls

26 teams represented bowlers from throughout the sugar industry.

THE Hulsar Bowls Tournament was held during the weekend at the Umhlali Country Club.

This year the main sponsor was SA Fire who was represented at the tournament by the General Manager: Crops Ruth Bezuidenhout.

The tournament will be celebrating its 80th year next year and has, over the years, brought the sugar industry together for a social weekend of bowls.

Twenty-six teams represented bowlers from throughout the sugar industry including growers, millers and suppliers.

Zululand was well represented with teams from Pongola, Melmoth, eShowe, Darnall and Amatikulu among others.

Starting in 1934, the tournament pitted the sugar growers against the millers at the Refinery Recreation Club at Rossburgh.

When the club had to make way for the Southern Freeway, the tournament was moved to Mount Edgecombe for a number of years.

It was then hosted by the Salt Rock Country Club before moving to its present home at uMhlali.

The winning team was Mondi (Bruce Hulett, Red Nortier, Dave Pechey and Casey Meyer).

The runners-up were Gledhow (Roy Govender, Stan Reeves, Louis Tolman and Mel Barotte).
