Mandlanzini protesters’ case postponed

Protesters' case postponed for further investigation.

THE accused facing charges of public violence following the Mandlanzini protest action a day before the national elections last month, appeared in the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court this week, where the matter was postponed for further investigation.

Bail of R500 was extended for the 19 accused, who will be back in court on 8 July.

Police had to intervene after violence erupted in Mandlazini on 6 May as residents armed with weapons gathered unlawfully, burnt tyres in the road and torched the Mandlazini community hall.

Forty-five community members were arrested at different times after illegally gathering with an intent to disturb the peace and were charged separately, but all face a common charge of public violence.

Meanwhile, the second group arrested at the Mandlanzini community hall where the building had been set on fire, face arson and malicious damage to property charges and will appear in court today (Thursday).
