Child rapist behind bars

An eSikhawini rapist was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment.

A RAPIST will spend 25 years behind bars for raping a six-year-old girl in eSikhwawini in 2012.

Kwazi Bonginkosi Makhunga (40) was convicted and sentenced in the eSkhawini Regional Court on Monday.

The court heard that on 27 May 2012, the young victim was sent on an errand by her grandmother at 7.30am when she was accosted and raped by the accused.

The victim’s nine-year-old sister witnessed the incident and reported the incident to the grandmother.

KZN police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, said this is a fitting sentence, serving as a warning to those intending to commit similar offences.

‘We encourage our children not to be intimidated by these criminals and report the crimes to police,’ she said.
