Kitted out and ready to curb crime

Moor Group sponsors CPF crime uniform.

FLAUNTING their new attire, generously sponsored by Moor Group owner Derrick Moor, the Empangeni Community Policing Forum (CPF) executive committee is ready to take to the streets to combat crime.

‘We are grateful for this generous sponsorship. The active role and investment placed in the CPF shows Moor’s commitment to help fight crime,’ said CPF Chairperson Zilindile Masango.

CPF Deputy Secretary Sululeko Mchunu said another positive development was the agreement the Executive Committee had entered into with the University of Zululand’s DramAid team last week, who have agreed to participate in the school crime awareness campaign.

Resident Ray Peyters has joined forces with Empangeni Welfare and SANCA to channel children in need through to social workers.

‘If there be a need for any sort of intervention or counselling, they are willing to step in and provide support. They also have an operational Child Protection Unit,’ said Peyters.

Matters arising

According to Exco Councillor Louis Fourie, CCTV cameras for the City are on the cards.

‘At present there are cameras situated within the City, but are not yet operative as the specs need to be changed from Domes to PTZ which will provide better visibility, especially at night.

‘They are currently busy with the 24/7 control room which will in time be linked up with the CCTV cameras. We hope it will be operational by August,’ Fourie said.

Concerned about the rise in illegal dumping, Fourie said on average more than R300 000 of taxpayers’ money is spent per month to keep the City clean.

‘Illegal dumping in the green belts is often committed by the very people living within the area. A summons can be issued and the fine has been put up to R5 000.

‘If residents can take a picture or jot down the registration number plate of the vehicles, I will ensure that protocol be followed to deal with the individual.

‘It is important that the community takes action against such things, because the money could be used toward other necessities if we all just played our part,’ said Fourie.
