Bon voyage Sister Jean

Sister Jean Moyo bids CANSA farewell

A WOMAN the community has come to know and love said her goodbyes last week.

After many years in the health sector, Sister Jean Moyo of the Cansa Helen Ludwig Care Centre in Empangeni, has decided to retire.

‘I have been at Cansa for only nine months, but I have been involved in the nursing and health sector since 1974,’ she said.

‘I actually lost my mother and niece to cancer. That is what sparked my interest in knowing more about the disease and how to treat and prevent it.

‘It has been such a pleasure working with Cansa. I have grown and learnt many new things. Living in town, we all seem to think that everything is rosy and well, but only when you are out there in the community do you become fully aware of the realities.

‘People are suffering and many of them lack knowledge, especially about cancer and other serious ailments. Cansa has equipped me with the tools to reform and influence our community,’ Moyo said.

‘Knowledge is power, and my leaving does not mean my work is done. As I go on a new journey, I will continue to educate and support cancer patients. And I encourage the youth to get involved with Cansa and help make a difference.’

Originally from Malawi, Moyo and her family moved to South Africa in 1992 when her husband took up a post at the University of Zululand and she at Ngwelezana Hospital.

‘Nursing was always my first love and passion. Serving and caring for people is what I thrive on,’ she said.

This compassionate 64-year-old plans to spend her time travelling and doing what she loves.

‘I will be spending time with my children and grandchildren. I have four handsome grandsons. I will also now have some extra time for my gardening. I have some good veggies and flowers in my garden.’

‘My favourite things to do are to knit and sew. I have always loved sewing. So I look forward to catching up on time with my machine and needles,’ she chuckled.
