There was a long queue along the John Ross highway

Richards Bay motorists were again met with a long queue of side-tipper trucks along the John Ross highway this (Wednesday) morning, awaiting entry to the local port.

The traffic congestion was coupled with wet weather conditions during the early morning rush.

Heavy vehicles queueing to enter the Port of Richards Bay were lined up from the Woodchip Glade to Alton intersections.

The recent influx comes despite ongoing efforts to reduce congestion on public roads, including truck staging areas being developed in and around the Port of Richards Bay.

A truck stop is currently being constructed along the John Ross highway and is expected to accommodate at least 350 side-tipper trucks once operational.

Another was opened at Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) in August, accommodating 300 to 400 side-tipper trucks inside the port.
