WATCH: Durban woman horrified after finding rat baked into bread loaf

Durban woman finds bits of rat baked into her loaf of brown bread - what would you do?

‘Traumatic and disgusting’. These were the words uttered by a Durban woman after reporting a rat that was baked into the loaf of bread she had bought.

Nombulelo Mkumla took to social media last week, posting a now-viral video showing what appears to be a rat baked into her loaf of bread.

In a Facebook video, Mkumla shared how she bought the bread from a nearby shop after work on 27 August.

For the next few days, she toasted slices of the bread, until she reached the section of the loaf where the rodent was.

“I took the bread out of the fridge to make toast and noticed something disgusting and scary. I took a picture and sent it to my friends, and one of them said, ‘Yi mpuku leyo tshomi’ [That’s a rat, friend].

“I was in denial and suggested it might be something else, but the rat scenario made sense – it’s possible the rat got into the bread at the factory, and no one noticed,” said Mkumla.

She took the bread back to the shop where she had bought it, but was told to lodge a complaint with the supplier. After sending an email containing images and videos of the source of her discontent, Mkumla was contacted by Sasko, who reportedly said ‘things like this are bound to happen’, but that measures were being put in place to prevent future incidents.

PepsiCo South Africa has since reacted to the situation, saying they were aware of the ‘isolated incident’, and that the loaf in question did not meet the company’s stringent standards.

Speaking to other media houses, PepsiCo South Africa’s Cornel Vermeulen said an investigation has been launched and samples were taken from the batch in question but no discrepancies were found.

He said the company has been keeping Mkumla updated on the situation.
