Mtuba water supply affected by drought, says district

The week-long water woes impacting Mtubatuba are the result of a drought.

This was shared by uMkhanyakude District Municipality via a social media post on Monday.

However, the municipality says the flow of the Mfolozi River, whose water levels drastically dropped in recent weeks, had improved by Monday, ‘resulting in an increase in available water for provision’.

“The enhanced river flow rate presents an opportunity for optimisation of water production and potential increase in bulk storage reservoirs.

“We appreciate the increase in levels and remain optimistic that it will contribute positively to the overall situation, however, water rationing will continue until further notice,” said the municipal manager, WM Nxumalo in the public notice.

Parts of KwaMsane had supply on Monday morning, but affected communities were urged to use water sparingly.

On Friday, the municipality said the flow rate of the river continued to decline, with upstream excavations in progress.

“The municipality is engaged in a comprehensive review of its contingency plans aimed at enhancing mitigation measures.

“Temporary water rationing schedules have been developed to ensure that at least all parts of the water supply area receive water at different times.”
