WATCH: Water crisis hits Mtubatuba as Mfolozi River levels drop

TEAMS have been deployed to dig trenches and boreholes to supply water to parts of Mtubatuba following a rapid decline in Mfolozi River levels.

This is a seasonal occurrence as the dry KwaZulu-Natal winter takes its toll, at times causing the Mfolozi River to stop flowing.

As in previous years, mitigating measures implemented by uMkhanyakude District Municipality have seen teams digging trenches so Mtubatuba Water Treatment Works (WTW) can pump water from the river.

“The situation is still critical at Mtubatuba WTW [where they are] experiencing low inflow levels. One borehole along the river has been commissioned and excavation [is] under way,” reads a statement issued by the municipality.

The municipality said the water supply was also interrupted by Tuesday’s mass power outage which spread in the areas of Richards Bay, eSikhaleni, eNseleni, Hluhluwe, Mtubatuba, Monzi and St Lucia.
