King Cetshwayo District dump best in KZN – survey

Annual AfriForum survey places district landfill in Empangeni at top of list

Despite a month-long ‘battle of the blaze’ spewing out noxious fumes, the King Cetshwayo Regional Landfill Site in Empangeni is said to stand ‘head and shoulders’ above the others in KwaZulu-Natal.

This is according to this year’s AfriForum audit on landfill sites, which saw the local refuse dump meeting 98% of the minimum legal requirements for responsible waste management.

It was the only site out of 10 audited in the province to have met the required standard.
“AfriForum audited 189 landfill sites nationwide to determine the current state of municipal and private landfills in South Africa. The annual audit determines whether landfill sites meet the necessary environmental, health and safety requirements for responsible waste management.

However, the vast majority – 85.8 per cent – failed this year’s audit,” said AfriForum’s provincial co-ordinator Eugene van Aswegen.
