Children uncover skeletal remains

Police uncover bones believed to be linked to the discovery of two skulls in the dunes last year

FUN in the sun quickly turned into an archaeology lesson for three children playing in the dunes behind the Richards Bay Caravan Park on Tuesday.

The young Meerensee residents were enjoying their school holiday on the beach when they suddenly unearthed human skeleton bones lodged in the sand.

Thinking it was the remains of a baboon, they took their findings home.

However, once their father saw the objects, he immediately took it to the Richards Bay SAPS.

Police reported to the scene and searched the area on Tuesday night, but with little luck in the dark, members of the Richards Bay SAPS together with the Empangeni K9 Unit returned on Wednesday morning where they recovered vertebrae, rib and other small bones yet to be identified.

‘It is suspected the skeleton could possibly be linked to two skulls found in the same area on the beach in September,’ said the Richards Bay SAPS in a statement.

‘The skulls were already sent away to the Victim Identification Unit in Pretoria and the skeleton remains found today will also be sent for DNA analysis to see if the skulls match the skeleton.’

Last year, the two skulls were discovered by a security guard of the caravan park.

The brittleness of the bones then indicated the skulls had been buried in the sand for at least 10 years.
