Women advised against hitchhiking following rise in rape, murder

Women warned against hitchhiking as rape and murder case rise

Incidents of hitchhiking ending in the rape and murder of women are once again on the rise across the Zululand region.

According to King Cetshwayo Cluster police spokesperson Captain Siyanda Shangase, eShowe, Empangeni and eSikhaleni are hot spots for such crimes, with hitchhiking reported as a contributing factor.

“Other factors contributing to the rape and murder of women and children are substance abuse and illegal liquor outlets. We urge women to avoid illegal outlets and substance abuse,” said Shangase.

Safety tips when travelling

Hitchhiking should be avoided and public transportation used wherever possible.

However, SAPS warns that where hitchhiking is the last resort, here are some tips to keep women safe:

• Always trust your instincts. If something feels strange, do not get into the vehicle

• Take photos of the vehicle registration number, as well as the interior and exterior

• Try to discreetly take a photo of the driver and send it to friends and family

• Turn on your live location to send it to your family and friends

• If possible, never hitchhike alone as there is safety in numbers
