Police confirm man wanted for questioning in connection with missing Sodwana Bay skipper

Search for missing Sodwana Bay skipper John Matambu enters fourth day

AS the search for missing Sodwana Bay fishing vessel skipper John Matambu enters its fourth day, police have confirmed they are looking for a man (pictured) to assist in solving the missing person’s case opened at Mbazwana Police Station.

According to the search team, the ‘person of interest’ and Matambu made it to Island Rock on Saturday as per the charter and Matambu messaged the base to say he would soon return.

Unverified information revealed that the boat went 10km further out to sea where Matambu’s cellphone was reportedly discarded.

Various lodges along the coast then reported to have seen the boat travelling at high speed until its torched carcass was found near Dobela.

The search party members then said there was a sighting of the man in question making his way down to Ponta Mamoli, and have confirmation that he spent a night in one of the huts in the local village.

“He arrived at 7pm at night. He said he was in a quad bike accident, and he sold two fishing rods to the local village,” said the member.

While speculation is rife across all social media platforms, all the police have confirmed is that Mbazwana SAPS opened a missing person’s case after John Matambu’s family reported him missing, and the same police station opened a case of malicious damage to property after the burnt out boat was found.

“If anyone has any information as to the whereabouts of this man, they are urged to contact Mbazwana Police Station on 035 5710005,” said uMkhanyakude District police spokesperson Captain Justice Hlabisa.
