Toddler and grandmother slain in brutal double murder

The suspect (31) was last seen at the Jozini bridge before jumping into Pongolapoort dam

Police are searching for a suspect who is believed to have murdered a toddler (3) and the child’s grandmother (91) in Thobothini last week.

Ingwavuma SAPS said the suspect (31) was last seen at the Jozini bridge before jumping into Pongolapoort dam after allegedly fleeing the murder scene.

Police Search & Rescue divers were scouring the dam in search of the man. The search is ongoing.

Police spokesperson Captain Sbusiso Mkhize said it is very concerning that these shocking murders come at a time when the country is observing 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Child Abuse.

Commenting on the case, he said it’s alleged the man and the child’s mother, believed to be in a relationship with the suspect, were arguing.

She reportedly heard him enter the home, which she fled, leaving her child and the child’s grandmother.

Having spent the night at a neighbour’s house, the mother returned to her home where she made the gruesome discovery.

“She called neighbours who came in their numbers to assist,” said Mkhize.

He said the victims had ‘open wounds on their heads’ and it is suspected that they were ‘cut with a sharp instrument like a bush knife’.

A case of murder has been opened and members of the public are urged to desist from taking the law into their own hands, but to rather call the police.
