WATCH: Repairs under way on sinking Empangeni road

The road was on Tuesday afternoon closed to the public, just two weeks after it was cordoned off for work to be carried out on leaking pipes beneath the surface

DURNFORD Road, one of Empangeni’s busiest commuter routes, has for the second time in as many weeks been closed to motorists amid sinkhole concerns.

The road was on Tuesday afternoon closed to the public, just two weeks after it was cordoned off for work to be carried out on leaking pipes beneath the surface.

In December 2021, the same section of road was closed after heavy rains on Christmas Eve caused a sinkhole.

Municipal workers dig up the road to expose the cause of the collapse

While pipes running under this section of road are deemed to be the issue, much repair work has been carried out to fix leaks, leaving workers baffled as to the actual cause of the problem.

Earlier this week, City of uMhlathuze communications manager Bongani Gina said workers are investigating the cause of the ongoing problem, and the municipality apologised for the inconvenience.

The closure of Durnford Road has left motorists frustrated, having to seek alternative routes for the duration.

There is no estimated time frame as to when the road will be reopened.
