WATCH: Trucks clog N2 as Transnet announces intervention measures

Motorists using the N2 to travel north through the affected area advised to re-route

As trucks awaiting entry to the Port of Richards Bay continue to use the N2 as a parking lot, Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) says it has come up with a solution to the problem.

Last week, trucks were backed up for more than 10km between the R34 John Ross highway exit and the eNseleni/R619 off-ramp, with similar queues today (Tuesday).

Motorists using the N2 to travel north through the affected area have been advised to exit the freeway at the John Ross off-ramp and redirect back onto the N2 via the R619 North Central Arterial, while those travelling south are advised to do this in reverse.

While an ‘unprecedented surge in truck arrivals’ over the last year is key in the congestion issues, various non-compliance issues have compounded truck congestion within the port.

But there is a silver lining to the problem, as Richards Bay port manager Dennis Mqadi said a number of intervention measures have been put in place.

These include expanded truck staging capacity to handle the more than 1 800 heavy vehicles entering the city – and the port – on a daily basis.
