No urgency to help dying man

Seriously ill man waits 24 hours for treatment

HE went into the hospital hoping to get urgent medical help on Thursday, but was made to wait almost 24 hours for a doctor, only to die a few hours after getting back home at the Jabulani Centre the following day.

This was the fate that befell Mkhulu Pedasi Mthembu (80), who has been living at the Jabulani Centre since it opened its doors in the early 70s.

Supervisor Good Buthelezi said Mthembu became gravely sick and they had to break down the locked door to his house.

‘We found him lying unconscious on the floor and hired a car to rush him to Ngwelezane Hospital.’

On their arrival there at around 9am, they were told to wait for a doctor.

Mthembu waited the whole of Thursday, but the doctor only arrived at the hospital on Friday morning, allegedly simply looked at his file, prescribed some tablets and told Mthembu to go home. A few hours after his arrival at the centre, he passed away.

‘We are very sad about Mthembu’s sudden passing. He was the oldest member of Jabulani and had become like a father to us all here at the centre,’ said Thuleleni Ntshangase.

Ngwelezane Hospital was contacted for comment, but had not responded at the time of going to print.
