Community joins industrial action in Mtunzini

Workers claim their employer is offering a 65c increase

Scores of community members from Obanjeni outside Mtunzini this morning (Monday) joined striking members of the National Union of Civil and Allied Workers (NUCAAW) members working at a local supermarket.

Workers embarked on industrial action relating to salary increases on Tuesday last week.

Speaking on behalf of the workers, union shop steward Thobile Majuda claims their employer is offering a 65c increase, which they deem as peanuts.

“We demand only a R5 increase. Everything has gone up. We are happy that the community members joined us to show their support and to indicate to the employer that we are not joking. We won’t back off until our demands are met,” she said.

Protesters blocked the R102 between Mtunzini and Obanjeni, forcing motorists to use an alternative route.

Attempts to obtain comment from the supermarket in question were unsuccessful.
