Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi is not critically ill, says spokesperson

Claims that Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi is fighting for his life in hospital have been refuted

Spokesperson and press officer to founder and President Emeritus of the IFP, Inkosi of the Buthelezi Clan and Traditional Prime Minister to the Zulu Monarch and Nation, Liezl van der Merwe refuted claims that Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi is fighting for his life in hospital.

“It has come to my attention that rumours are circulating regarding the ill health of HRH Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.

“In the interest of allaying fears, I wish to confirm that Prince Buthelezi has been hospitalised, but is not critically ill,” she said.

Van der Merwe explained that Buthelezi was admitted for routine tests and treatment for prolonged back pain, and underwent a small procedure for pain management.

“He was discharged, but unfortunately needed to be readmitted for further treatment and recovery,” she said.

She added that the nation would be kept abreast as and when necessary.

“A request has been made that well-wishers please refrain from visiting, as a speedy recovery depends on rest,” she added.
