Mtubatuba court sentences callous criminals

The men were convicted of numerous crimes including murder and attempted murder

MTUBATUBA Magistrate’s Court on Monday handed down hefty sentences to four hardened criminals on a total of 18 charges.

This after the four were convicted of robbery with aggravating circumstances, theft, attempted murder, murder, and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Zakhele Vusi Gumbi (32) was sentenced to 23 years’ imprisonment, Sibusiso Velenkosini Mkhwanazi (32) to 20 years behind bars, Philani Carlos Mzimela (32) to 26 years, and Siyabonga Michael Sangweni (20) to 23.

On 2 February 2022, the suspects entered a business premises in Mtubatuba and demanded cash.

They stole money and electronic devices before attempting to flee the scene. They were cornered by the police and a shootout ensued, resulting in two suspects sustaining gunshot wounds to their legs.

Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said the matter was investigated by Mtubatuba police and a preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects were wanted for various crimes.

“Despite the suspects claiming they were innocent, police were able to disprove their version of what happened on that day. The suspects made several court appearances before they were convicted and sentenced,” said Ngcobo.
