Schoolchildren killed in horror accident

Reports indicate that the bakkie was carrying a total of 18 learners

Four people, including three schoolchildren, died in a horrific accident on Tuesday afternoon.

The accident occurred on the gravel road in the Upper eNseleni area near Mkhandlwini reserve under the uBuka Tribal Authority.

Reports indicate that the bakkie was carrying a total of 18 learners from Nkosithandile High School and Mkhandlwini Primary School when the tyre burst along the gravel road.

The driver lost control of the vehicle and it overturned several times, ejecting the learners. Cebile Biyela (16) was declared dead on scene.

The driver, Thamisanqa Mkhize (22); Sandiso Mabaso (16), and Abanathi Msweli (8) were rushed to Bhuchanana Clinic where they succumbed to their injuries while receiving medical attention.

King Cetshwayo Cluster police spokesperson Captain Siyanda Shangase said a case of culpable homicide was registered at Melmoth SAPS.

“All four bodies were taken to the eShowe state mortuary. The other 12 learners were rushed to Ngwelezana Hospital and three were taken to Bhuchanana Clinic,” she said.
