University of Zululand suspends academic activities

Unizulu management said the temporary closure is to allow affected students to receive counselling

Academic activities have been suspended at the University of Zululand (Unizulu) following the attack and robbery of students at an off-campus residence.

It reported that criminals invaded the accredited residence of the university on Tuesday night.

In a brief statement on Facebook on Wednesday, Unizulu management said the temporary closure is to allow affected students to receive counselling and for investigations.

“The University of Zululand community learnt with shock about allegations that a group of criminals invaded a university-accredited external residence last night.

“After being accosted, the group ran past some of the other accredited residences and there are reports of gunshots that were fired.

“Notice is hereby given that all academic activities are suspended with immediate effect,” said Unizulu.

Fourth year communication science student Isaac Gumede, who lives off-campus, said the unknown suspects broke into a number of off-campus residences and stole mostly gadgets, including laptops and cellphones belonging to students.

“They were breaking down doors and entering students’ rooms. But some students alerted neighbours and two suspects were caught by the police,” said Gumede.

Gumede said students, particularly those living off-campus, ‘do not feel safe’.

“The decision to suspend activities will have an impact as we were busy with assignments and other preparations leading up to exams,” he said.

King Cetshwayo Cluster police spokesperson Captain Siyanda Shangase confirmed the incident at Dwalalabasha cottages. He said a case of house robbery has been opened at the Mtunzini police station.
