WATCH: Road to St Lucia at risk of washing away after floods

Eastern Shores road to Cape Vidal underwater

After Saturday’s heavy rainfall throughout the Zululand region, early Sunday morning brought reports of much flooding, and blocked and damaged roads.

The R618 between Mtubatuba and St Lucia is at risk of collapsing in parts, while the road through Eastern Shores Game Reserve within iSimangaliso Wetland Park, also flooded.

By 8.30am today (Sunday), START rescue members had inspected the N2 from Mtubatuba to Hluhluwe, and found the road to be clear.

The teams will inspect the N2 further north during the course of the day.

Disaster Management teams are also monitoring weather conditions as more heavy rains are expected today (Sunday).

More than 100 people who were trapped in flooded areas in Newcastle and Mhlathuze were successfully evacuated with search and rescue efforts still continuing in some areas.

In Mtubatuba Ward 9 (Nkatha Road), a vehicle was swept away with two occupants, however, one was able to escape.

In Ndumo, teams are searching for a scholar who went missing yesterday (Saturday) in Ngwavuma.
