Heavy rainfall and possible flooding expected over parts of the country

Cut-off low pressure system to develop in the west and move to the east

South Africans are in for more wet weather from today (Wednesday) as a severe weather system is set to bring heavy rainfall and potential flooding.

This as a cut-off low pressure system is expected to develop over the western interior of the country, moving into the central interior where it will become quasi-stationary from Thursday to Saturday.

The system is expected to dissipate on Sunday.

The SA Weather Service (SAWS) issued a severe weather warning on Monday, saying persistent rainfall for several days may result in widespread flooding over the central, southern and eastern parts of the country.

This is owing to the slow-moving nature of cut-off low systems.

Movement of cut-off low

SAWS said rainfall was forecast to start in the west of the country on Monday and is expected to slowly move eastwards, with heavier showers and thunder showers possible along its path.

The cut-off low is expected to develop on Wednesday evening, resulting in widespread rainfall.

No weather warnings for specific areas have been issued as yet, with SAWS saying, “Given that the system is only expected to develop on Wednesday, there is still a fair amount of uncertainty regarding the rate at which the system will intensify, as well as the location and timing of possible severe weather phenomena”.

It was a cut-off low system that caused last April’s flooding in KZN, which caused billions of rands worth of damage to infrastructure, among others, much of which is yet to be repaired.
