WATCH: Mini-substation on fire in Richards Bay suburb

The substation reportedly caught fire an hour after the end of load-shedding

CITY of uMhlathuze Fire & Rescue are on scene at a substation fire in Ouhoutoord road in Arboretum.

The mini-substation reportedly caught fire approximately one hour after the end of load-shedding in the affected suburb.

Fire Department personnel wasted no time in arriving to extinguish the blaze which, owing to the location of the mini-substation on a grass verge, under trees and directly outside houses, could have led to disaster had it not been attended to quickly enough.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but municipal officials in the electrical department will investigate the matter.

This after parts of Meerensee were left without electricity on Tuesday night after a trip at the substation outside Pick ‘n Pay.

Chairperson of the electrical portfolio, Christo Botha says these issues are part of the legacy of many years of non-maintenance of critical infrastructure.

Speaking to the Zululand Observer on Wednesday, Botha said funds are being made available in the mid-year budget to invest in electrical infrastructure.
