eShowe rape suspect nabbed within two days

The 24-year-old suspect will apply for bail next week

A rape suspect was arrested in eShowe on Monday, just two days after the incident was reported.
King Cetshwayo Cluster police spokesperson Captain Siyanda Shangase said the victim was celebrating her 18th birthday at a restaurant with friends.

“Reports indicate that while she was on her way home at about 4.30pm, she was accosted by an unknown man. She was just 500m from her residence.”

He said the victim reported that a man wearing a surgical mask came from nowhere and threatened to stab her with a pair of scissors.

She was pulled into the forest where he covered her face, undressed her, stabbed her in the thigh with a pair of scissors before repeatedly raping her.

“After the rape, the suspect (24) robbed the victim of her cellphone and birthday gifts,” he said.

“The victim ran home naked as the suspect took away her jeans and underwear.”

A rape case was opened at eShowe SAPS and the suspect was arrested on Monday. The victim’s cellphone and other items were recovered.

“The suspect was positively linked to other rape cases,” continued Shangase.

He appeared at eShowe Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday and was remanded in police custody for further investigation. He is expected to appear next Thursday for a formal bail application.
