Eight firearms, ammunition recovered in one week

The confiscations were the result of crime crackdowns across King Cetshwayo District

King Cetshwayo District police commissioner Major General Sipho Ngubane commended his forces on the recovery of eight firearms and sixty rounds of ammunition in various parts of the district in less than a week.

A 42-year-old suspect was arrested in Nkandla for possession of an unlicensed firearm and eight live rounds of ammunition.

The suspect has already appeared in the local magistrate’s court and the case was remanded to a future date.

King Cetshwayo Cluster spokesperson Captain Siyanda Shangase said last Tuesday eShowe SAPS arrested a 38-year-old suspect for unlawful possession of a handgun with two rounds of ammunition.

“He appeared in court on Wednesday and was remanded in police custody for further investigation. He is expected to reappear at the same court soon,” said Shangase.

“On the same day, a 28-year-old suspect was arrested in eSikhaleni for being in possession of a pump gun with 32 rounds of ammunition.

“On Thursday, police in KwaMbonambi recovered two firearms with six rounds of ammunition following a high-speed chase. The suspects fled from the police after abandoning their stolen vehicle with the two firearms.

“On Friday night, in a police blitz focusing on the KwaMbonambi area, police recovered two firearms with 10 rounds of ammunition and arrested two suspects,” he said.

Major General Sipho Ngubane expressed concern over the number of illegal firearms in the hands of criminals in the communities.

He urged all residents to rid their communities of illegal firearms by reporting these to the SAPS toll-free number 08600 10111. Their names will be treated with confidentiality.

“It is of grave concern to all of us that so many firearms in the hands of criminals are used to kill innocent people within our district,” said Ngubane.

He urged everyone to be involved in the fight against crime to save the communities. He said police would continue in their efforts to make communities feel safe and be safe wherever they are.
