Cricket dramcom in the making

You don't want to miss the annual Bully Drew Memorial match at Empangeni's Addison Park on Saturday

IF you love to watch cricket played at the highest level of skill and competitiveness, stay away from Addison Park on Saturday, 13 August.

It’s all about the camaraderie and fellowship of yesterday’s heroes

But if you enjoy a bunch of fun-loving players now well past their sell-by date enjoying a game as much as their frail and feeble body parts will allow, you won’t want to miss the annual Bully Drew Memorial match.

The stars of yesteryear are already rummaging through boxes in their garages searching for the old bats and pads as well as whatever kit might still fit their once slim bodies, as well as caps to protect their balding domes from the sun.

Some may even be as adventurous enough as to have a net leading up to the game in order to revive some sort of muscle memory, but that has its own potential dire consequences as most overheat before they get warm.

Perhaps Shawn Francis has managed to find his long pants by now?

Be that as it may, the contest between the Mighty Zulus and the Cane Rats XI will start at 9am and is sure to produce plenty of laughs, loads of camaraderie and even the odd champagne cricket but maybe minus the sparkling bubbles.

Roger Lavoiperre and Steve Tomlinson are expected to put together a partnership of over 150…but that is merely their combined age as umpires.

Team sheets include the following “blast from the past” players: Nelson Gouge, Colin Hume, Patrick Lendrum, Shawn Francis, Richard Allan, Richard Penn-sawyers, Paul Gouge, Perry Colbalt, Steven Lavoipierre, Conner Lendrum, Clive Van Der Spuy, Derrik Dupavillon, Errol Boulle and possibly Rip van Winkel.
