WATCH: Port of Richards Bay makes headway with clearing truck backlog

As the City of uMhlathuze worked to locate and repair the fault on Monday

AN 18-hour electricity outage affecting the Port of Richards Bay, among other areas, led to a backlog of hundreds of trucks awaiting port entry.

As the City of uMhlathuze worked to locate and repair the fault on Monday, the trucks, denied port entry owing to the power outage, quickly built up along the John Ross and N2 highways.

By this morning (Tuesday), the queue of mostly side-tipper trucks on the westbound carriageway reached all the way to Meerensee, placing great strain on rush-hour commuters.

As of late morning on Tuesday, however, much headway had been made, with space having been made inside the port to process the trucks.

According to uMhlathuze Councillor Christo Botha, 342 trucks lined the John Ross this morning, but by 11am, only 42 were still awaiting port entry.

“The port companies have been notified not to send any trucks for at least 24 hours, as there are no ships to be loaded, as well as to prevent further potential problems on the John Ross,” said Botha on Tuesday morning.
