Alkantstrand will be pumping

Half a million cubic metres of sand to be pumped onto Alkantstrand

WITH the dredger pipeline connecting the T-jetty to just north of the main bathing beach at Alkantstrand having been completely replaced, preparations are being made to pump more than 500 000 cubic metres of sand onto the blue flag beach.

‘Not too much replenishing of sand has been done over the past two months since the pipeline was renewed and the dredger Isandlwana will be absent until the end of June, but once she is back the pumping will begin in earnest,’ said former Project Manager for Dredging Services, Kevin Stobart.

‘Between June and August, at least half a million cubic metres of dredged soil will be pumped.’

The pipeline is 650 metres long and has a diameter of 1 090mm.

The original pipeline lasted over 10 years but owing to the abrasive nature of sand, the pipe became badly worn, necessitating its replacement.

Replenishing the beach sand became necessary when construction of the harbour breakwaters prevented the natural northward migration of sand.
